Phoenix Independent is a Winterguard based out of Sylvania, OH established in 2006. We primarily rehearse on the Campus of BGSU in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Our performers come from all over the region including Michigan, Indiana, and all around Ohio.

When did you march? 2010 - Just a Thought

Did you march anywhere else?
Not for indoor, but marched at St. John's Jesuit and the University of Toledo
.
How did you get your start in guard?
My high school instructor started the program at SJJ when I was there, but I didn't know it was much bigger until college. By the time I realized it I only got one season in, but it was an amazing experience!
.
Favorite winter guard shows?
Every 40 Seconds - Mechanicsburg HS
Six Wives - CGT Dallas
Downtown - West Broward HS
.
What was your favorite memory?
Chad waking us up the morning after sleeping on air mattresses at Donnell or wherever we were and the Florida regional trip!
.
What's life like now? I am an elementary school counselor. I was also the guard and visual instructor at SJJ for 17 years, Van Buren High School for 11 and counting, the current guard instructor at BGSU, and I write guard books for some other Ohio schools. I love being a counselor! I live with my best friend, Nicole, I have a dog, Bentley, and two cats, Allie and Tiny. I live in Toledo. I'm still involved in the guard world, I've been on (and am currently on) the OIPA Board of Directors, and in my spare time I like reading, doing escape rooms, and going to Disney World!

What did you learn?
Phoenix helped lay the foundation for everything I know about guard. I learned how to create something beautiful in a way I never had. It gave me an opportunity to grow, be part of a team, and be there for people.
.
The show I was in was really inspirational, quirky at times, but it focused on these thoughts to keep in mind. Two are "Most people don't see the world as it is. They see it as they are. WE choose to see the world as we want it to be," and "The best measure of success is joy." I could have been in any show with any group anywhere, but I was in THIS show with Phoenix. And I'm not kidding when I say I think about these lines every day. They have helped me in tough times and to gain perspective. Totally a happy accident, but I'll always be grateful for that ❤️

Winter guard allows me to express myself more than anything else. I love getting to connect to my show and teammates in new ways and showing that to the audience.

I have marched fall guard for four years. This will be my first winter season.

What are some of your favorite winter guard shows?
Alanis: Mechanicsburg 2022, Voila: Avon High School 2024, and Ghost Train: Collage Winter
.
How did you get your start in winter guard?
My high school did not have a winter guard, but we would go together to watch the groups. Moving to BG gave me the opportunity to finally join an independent group!

Outside of color guard, what other things do you enjoy?
Outside of guard I really enjoy listening to music while doing puzzles. I also love to spend time and travel with my friends and family.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m currently majoring in business with a specialization in finance at BGSU. I hope to become a financial advisor for a corporate agency.

How did you get your start in winter guard?
I got my start by seeing posters around my highschool and I really wanted to try out the tail end of my freshman year. So I called my mom like 5 minutes before auditions saying that I was staying and I ended up making it! It’s been hard and it’s ups and downs but winterguard has changed my life and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to be and art teacher or art therapist. I want to give kids the same outlet I had. Guard and art have been there when I needed and outlet and i others to be able to move and create like I did and still do.

Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself?
Winterguard has been such a gift in my life! Despite an injury and thinking I’d never spin or be able to use my hands normally again, I’m able to spin this season. You never know what a gift being able to perform is until it’s taken away. If you are in guard now keep going keep pushing yourself you never know where it might take you! Persevere.

How did you get your start in winter guard?

How did you get your start in winter guard?
I had always thought it was a such a cool sport and it looked like a lot of fun, and one of my friends who has been in it for a long time told me to join, so I did!

Outside of color guard, what other things do you enjoy?
I love photography, cooking and baking, and spending time outside, and being around the people I love.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan on attending cosmetology school next year and I will continue my career in that alongside guard.

What’s your favorite thing about the winter guard season and/or Phoenix?
I love getting do what makes me happiest with such an amazing group of people!!

Outside of color guard, what other things do you enjoy?
I love photography, cooking and baking, and spending time outside, and being around the people I love.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan on attending cosmetology school next year and I will continue my career in that alongside guard.

I love getting do what makes me happiest with such an amazing group of people!!

I did color guard at my high school and my coach said that I should try out for winter guard, and I fell in love with it and met lots of great people.

Outside of color guard, what other things do you enjoy?
I love to knit and make art, i love my 5 cats, and I do acting and theater!

What’s your favorite thing about the winter guard season and/or Phoenix?
I love to dance, spin, and really push myself to the next level. My absolute favorite is meeting new people who share the same love and being able to work together and be proud of what we do.

What are some of your favorite winter guard shows?
AMP ‘22 and UCF Pegasus World ‘23

How did you get your start in winter guard?
I marched for a year playing saxophone and that was when I first saw the colorguard. I originally went to auditions for the winter season just to see what it was like, but after many people talked me into it and I actually made it onto the team I stuck with it!

Outside of color guard, what other things do you enjoy?
I enjoy spending lots of my time with my cats, as well as going out with friends!

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to become a guard instructor! I want to spread the same joy and excitement I experience every competition and rehearsal to so many others!

Once fall season ended my freshman year of high school, I wanted a chance to improve my skills and get closer with people, so I joined my high school’s team and stuck with it ever since !!

Outside of color guard, what other things do you enjoy?
i love playing video games, reading, napping, and hanging out with my friends

What’s your favorite thing about the winter guard season and/or Phoenix?
i love the competition aspect of things as well as the chance to learn new things and improve the skills i already have - and getting really close with the team is always nice too !

Phoenix feels like an automatic family. Everyone is so talented and so passionate about the sport. It's easy to find a home with Phoenix.
